Gear Upgrades Prior to Alaskan Fishing Vacation

Pybus Point Lodge Logo

For many who are planning an Alaskan fishing excursion at any point in the future, this is a major event you'll be preparing for in several ways. One common theme here is the purchase of new or upgraded fishing gear, which many fishers choose to handle just before taking a major fishing trip.

At Pybus Point Lodge, while we're happy to provide a comprehensive range of fishing equipment for any of our clients who need it as part of our all-inclusive fishing trips, we also work with many clients who prefer to bring some or all of their own gear as well. What are some of the top upgrade areas you might consider to your gear before you head up to our beautiful state for a fishing adventure? Here are several to keep in mind.

Rod Upgrades

The fishing rod is the most prominent piece of any fishing gear setup, and there are several upgrades you may want to consider before you come up for your Alaskan trip. Upgrade and replace old and worn out fishing rods with sturdy, high quality fresh gear that will ensure a great experience without worrying about losing fish.

One common option we recommend is the use of graphite fishing rods – they're lighter weight than fiberglass or other materials, which is a nice feature in a long day on the water with heavy gear. Graphite rods are also extremely sensitive, so you'll have no problem feeling your way through the best fishing spots and picking up on subtle bites or signs of nearby fish in any body of water.

Another strong option for fishers is stainless steel fishing rods, which offer a sturdy, subtle feel and anti-corrosion qualities that will help your gear last longer. This is especially useful in Alaskan waters where saltwater fishing can be a contributing factor to the wear and tear on your equipment.

Reel Upgrades

While rods are definitely key, you should also strongly consider upgrading your reel, which is the mechanism used to reel in the fishing line. If you find yourself losing control on your lines or feeling like something is off, it may be time for new fishing reels before taking an Alaskan trip.

One common suggestion we give to clients who are concerned about gear maintenance and want to ensure they have everything necessary for an enjoyable trip is to invest in a fly reel. These are great for making sure your line is always in the best shape possible, and they also provide a smoother feel for better casting capabilities. This product upgrade will not only make you more confident about staying on top of your fishing lines, but it'll also give you an easier time when dealing with any unexpected runs or jumps from fish you're trying to catch.

In addition, we recommend proper lubrication of your reel, especially if you're headed up to Alaska in colder months. The cold can be a major factor to consider when it comes time for fishing, and any tools which don't work as smoothly as they should can become a real problem. You may want to consider purchasing a reel that is specifically made with lubrication points in mind, whether it's a newer version model or a mark down in price for greater savings.

Bait Changes

Bait is also very important for attracting fish to your line, and you want both efficient and attractive bait to ensure everything line up for a good time. Upgrade your fishing lures to see better results when you head out on the water, even if it's just a small upgrade in colors or style.

In addition, consider what kind of bait is available where you're headed. In some areas near our lodge in Alaska, fish have been known to bite on salmon eggs, while other locations are known for favoring different bait options. It's always a good idea to make sure your fishing trip is as simple as possible by making yourself familiar with the types of bait which are most commonly used in the area you're headed to, and bringing plenty of it along.

Hook Upgrade

Whether it's through the purchase of new hooks or simply the sharpening of your current hooks, it's vital that you have the best possible fishing hooks with you on any Alaskan trip. Good hooks will ensure a better chance of catching fish, and sharp ones will help you get more enjoyment from your time spent reeling in that big one that got away last year.

In many cases, people choose to upgrade not just the type of hook they use, but the size as well. The smaller your hook, the more likely you are to catch a fish – but remember that this option does not make a sharp hook any less important.

GPS System

A reliable GPS tracker is always valuable during a fishing trip, and the fact that trips to Alaska can take you through many different locations where fishing is challenging makes this a valuable tool. With so many bodies of water and so much variability in conditions around them, it's easy to get lost while fishing or find yourself in an area without good visibility.

This is why we recommend fishermen invest in a GPS tracker that can be mounted to a boat or a fishing rod. These small devices come with many valuable features, such as the ability to track your location at all times and to have a specific GPS plan available for you when you need it most. If you're going out in an area where the signal may not be strong enough to rely on your phone, especially if you're stream-fishing on your own and without the assistance of our guides, we strongly recommend a GPS device -- or an upgrade of your previous older device.

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.
