How to Select the Perfect Fishing & Vacation Spot in Alaska

Pybus Point Lodge Logo

When you are planning a trip to Alaska for fishing, there are a lot of decisions that you will need to make. You have to figure out where you want to go, where you want to stay, and perhaps most importantly, where you want to go fishing.

The Pacific Ocean waters around the Inside Passage have some of the most incredible fishing in the world, but just because you’re out on the water doesn’t automatically mean you will be able to catch fish. It won’t surprise anyone to hear that the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Alaska is very large, and that fish are not going to be in every square inch of that ocean.

You will also need to select a vacation spot where you want to stay during your trip. The Inside passage and areas around Juneau are beautiful, but can be very remote. Finding a place where you can set up shop for the night that provides access to the places where you want to fish is important so you can make the most of your time in this beautiful state.

Here are some ideas for how you can choose a destination for your lodging and for your fishing excursions.

Option 1: Get Lucky

The first option for your Alaskan vacation is to simply wing it and try to get lucky. You could book a hotel and rent a boat nearby that you take out on the ocean. Of course you will need to have the proper licenses and experience to operate a fishing boat for this to work. You will also be hoping that you can get lucky and find some great fishing grounds without any real background or effort.

It probably won’t come as a shock to hear that we do not recommend this type of vacation unless you are extremely skilled and experienced on the water, and you have spent a lot of time out on the ocean fishing already. If that describes you, then you probably don’t really need to read this blog.

Option 2: Book a Patchwork Vacation on DIY Websites

A second option for you to book your trip and catch some great fish is what we will call the “DIY” vacation. You can spend hours poring over lots of different vacation websites to find the perfect hotel where you can stay for several nights. It needs to:

  • Be in close proximity to the fishing excursions that you plan to go on
  • Have all the comforts you would expect during a vacation stay, like free WiFi and daily maid service
  • Be located near a lot of suitable dining options where you can get your meals
  • Include convenient options for day treks besides just fishing if you want to do something else while you’re in Alaska

This option is one that millions of people attempt each year. It’s not the worst choice, because you can sometimes find a really great hotel and a fishing tour company with the right experience to take you out on the water. Of course, if you are planning to go fishing more than one day it could get expensive to book multiple tours to go out to sea. And don’t forget to get the right sport fishing license from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game for anyone in your party who is planning to catch some fish.

The DIY option also has the drawback of trying to figure out what to do with any fish that you catch. Some fishing tours might clean and package it for travel, but if not then you have to find someone who can prepare it to go home on the plane when you leave.

Option 3: Stay at an All-Inclusive

The last option is probably the best one if you want to make the most of your Alaskan vacation. This option gives you the best of all worlds when you stay at Pybus Point Lodge. We have:

  • Daily fishing excursions with the best tour guides in the business
  • The best fishing gear to catch enormous fish
  • Cleaning, vacuum sealing, and packaging for up to 50 pounds of fish
  • Beautiful and comfortable resort-style accommodations
  • WiFi and daily maid service
  • Gourmet food prepared by incredible chefs that blends local Alaskan flavors with your comfort food favorites
  • Day trips and excursions to see some of the most incredible natural beauty the world has to offer, including waterfall hikes, wildlife photography tours, and bear sightseeing
  • Glacier tours to the famous Sawyer Glacier and Tracy Arm Fjord
  • Kayaks and skiffs to take out on the pristine waters of Pybus Bay

The best part about staying at an all-inclusive resort is that everything you see above (and more) is all included in the price of your stay. All you need to do is pack a light carryon bag with some clothes and shoes—and your camera, of course—and we’ll take care of the rest.

Our experience guides know exactly where the fish will be biting, and what type of fish are in season. We also take care of all your licensing needs, so you are legally able to go out and catch fish in Alaska.

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.
