Private Jet Skiffs

A few of our guests heading out to fish in their own private jet skiff!

Alaska is home to some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty in the world on both land and sea. No trip to Alaska is complete without spending at least a little bit of time out on the water, whether you plan on fishing or not. Some guests might want to spend as much time out on the boat as possible. If you’re looking for the chance to spend your afternoons searching for that perfect halibut or even if you’re looking for a chance to explore Alaska’s scenic bays at your own pace, we’ve got the perfect opportunity for you!

An all-inclusive vacation at Pybus Point Lodge doesn’t just mean that your cabin comes with free coffee and three gourmet meals a day. It means that you’ll have access to a wide range of amenities, guided adventures, and even free access to our fleet of jet-drive skiffs. Skiffs are available to all of our guests, regardless of previous boating experience.

What Exactly Is A Skiff?

Two guests fishing for halibut off the back of their own skiff!

If you’re new to the world of boating, there’s a good chance that you’ve never even heard the word skiff before. Essentially, the word skiff is just a fancy way of saying small, fishing boat. Skiffs typically range anywhere from 12-18 feet long, have flat bottoms, and generally don’t have any real covered cabin. Because of their small size, these boats are meant to stay close to the shore and travel shorter distances.

At the lodge, our skiffs are all equipped with a jet-drive motor meaning that instead of propellers pushing the boats forward, you have a powerful jet of water that helps the skiff glide across the ocean surface.

What Are These Skiffs For?

At the lodge, these skiffs are free for all of our guests (18 and older) to use for a variety of different activities. Pybus Point Lodge is located in the gorgeous Inside Passage of Alaska meaning that we’re situated in some of the best scenery and fishing in the entire world. If you’re looking for a chance to see some of the local sights without having to get your boots muddy, skiffs provide an unforgettable sight seeing adventure. You’ll be amazed at what you can see as you explore all of the remote coves and islands near the lodge. You might even get to spot some local wildlife like brown bears, sea otters, or even humpback whales while out exploring.

Another great way to use our skiff fleet is to go out fishing. Every guest at Pybus will have their own full-time guide to take them out fishing and sightseeing every day, but sometimes 8 hours just isn’t enough. If you want to head out in the late afternoon and spend a few hours on a self-guided fishing adventure, we’ll set you up with a private skiff. There’s even an added bonus that comes with taking a self-guided fishing trip; non-Alaska residents are only allowed to keep one halibut per day while on a guided expedition, and that halibut has to fit within the slot. While on an unguided expedition non-state residents are allowed to keep an additional halibut of any size, meaning that you can keep up to two halibut per day if you decide to head out on a skiff!

How Do I Sign Up For A Skiff?

Our beautiful new dock.

Skiffs are available on a first come first serve basis. If you’re interested in taking out a skiff, all you have to do is head on down to our dock and talk to a member of our dock team. To ensure that you get your chance to take out a skiff we recommend letting a dock team member know that you’d like a skiff first thing in the morning and they’ll reserve a skiff for you at your desired time slot.

Once you’re ready to take off one of our dock team members will give you a brief tutorial on how to pilot the skiff, how to use the gps, and where all the safety equipment is located. (Every skiff is outfitted with a fire extinguisher, flare gun, life vests, and a VHF radio.) After the tutorial the skiff is all yours! If you have any questions while you’re out on the water, all you have to do is give us a call on the radio. We have multiple radios throughout the lodge that are constantly being monitored by our staff.

What If I Don’t Know How To Pilot A Skiff?

A man cruising through Alaska's Inside Passage in his own jet skiff!

If you’ve never captained a skiff, or any boat for that matter, there’s no need to worry. Our skiffs are incredibly easy to drive and have everything you need for success! Each skiff has a basic throttle for acceleration and a standard steering wheel, and that’s all you need to drive!

After leaving the dock, there’s nothing to worry about–we only allow our guests to check out a skiff when the water conditions are safe. All you have to do while piloting the skiff is watch out for any obstructions that might damage the hull. To make things easy for you, each skiff has a Garmin GPS unit that will tell you exactly how deep of water you’re in. As long as you pay attention to the depth (and watch out for any rocks or logs sticking out above the ocean’s surface) you have no risk of accidentally damaging the hull of the boat.

Speaking of the GPS, these Garmin units are high-quality and will always show you exactly where you are and how to make it back to the lodge. When you check out your skiff our dock team will show you the boundaries of how far from the lodge you’re allowed to travel. As long as you stay within the boundaries we tell you, the lodge will always be easy to find!

And like we said, each skiff has a VHF radio. If you experience any problems driving, you get lost, or have any mechanical issues, we’ll come and help!

Do I Need My Own Gear?

A couple of halibut jigs.

At Pybus Point Lodge, it’s all included! Just let the dock team know that you intend to go fishing and they’ll equip you with everything you need. We have rods, reels, tackle, bait, nets, knives, pliers, and everything else you need to catch a halibut. Each skiff can even come equipped with a custom stocked cooler upon request!

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.
