Pybus Point Lodge Announces New, Full-Day, Self-Guided Fishing Excursion

Self-guided fishermen showing off their 165 pound halibut!

Pybus Point Lodge is excited to announce our brand new, full day, self-guided fishing excursion!

Our guests have always had the opportunity to enjoy self-guided fishing in the waters near our lodge in their own jet-drive skiff. But now guests at Pybus Point Lodge will be able to check out their own high-performance fishing boat complete with a covered cab, cushy seats, and state of the art electronics and venture out further into the inside passage for a full day of self-guided fishing!

Fish The Inside Passage – No Guide Required!

Alaska’s Inside Passage has been a major fishing destination for generations. This unique waterway is protected from harsh weather conditions by a large cluster of islands on one side and the mainland on the other. Because of the geography, the area provides anglers with miles upon miles of calm, fishable water. In the summer months, halibut move into the Inside Passage and its surrounding islands looking for food in the shallow waters making for ideal Alaska halibut fishing conditions.

The glassy water conditions in the Inside Passage.

That’s why we’re so excited to announce our new self guided fishing program! While we do still provide all of our guests with their own full-time guides, we understand if you prefer the challenge of fishing on your own. Alaska is all about taking your destiny into your own hands, and we’re here to help!

How It Works

Our new dock along with part of our fleet of custom-built boats.

At our all-inclusive lodge, everything is always provided. If you’d like to spend a day on the water by yourself, all you have to do is ask! Our self-guided boats are available on a first come first serve basis, and can be reserved one day in advance. While making your reservation, we’ll ask you how many people you’ll be fishing with and what species of fish you’d like to target so we can properly outfit your boat.

When you arrive on our docks in the morning, you’ll have your own boat fully loaded with rods, tackle, bait, and a cooler packed with your favorite drinks. Plus our kitchen staff will have a big selection of pre-made food ready to go for you to take on the boat! If you have any specific requests, ask one of our dockhands for assistance and they’ll be happy to help you with anything you need.

While out on the water, you’re free to travel where you like! The water around the lodge is typically calm as can be, and full of spectacular fishing holes. Your boat will be equipped with a state of the art Garmin GPS, so navigation should never be an issue. If you ever have any questions or run into any problems you can always reach the lodge via your boat’s VHF radio.

The only restriction that you have during your self-guided fishing experience is time. In order to get the day's fish fileted, cleaned, and vacuum sealed, we ask that all boats return to our dock no later than 4:00 PM. Once you return, our dock team will make sure that everything you caught is recorded, processed, and packed into your fish box!

Self-guided fishing is only available as a full day excursion, meaning that you would have to forfeit a full day spent with your guide. That does not however mean that you have to spend the full day on the water, you’re more than welcome to pair the self-guided fishing excursion with any of our other half day excursions like our guided kayak tour or our hidden waterfall hike.

Please be aware that our self-guided fishing excursion is only available to guests with previous boating experience. Given the remote location of our lodge, it’s important that all activity is being conducted in a safe and responsible manner. If you don’t have any previous boating experience, don’t worry! You can still enjoy our self-guided bay fishing excursion. We’ll set you up in your own open deck jet skiff, and you’re free to explore the waters near the lodge.

If you didn’t catch everything you hoped for on your self-guided fishing trip, don’t lose hope! Our open deck jet skiffs are available until sunset, a few hours after the self-guided fishing day has ended. Just be aware that the time of day that our jet skiffs must be returned to our dock changes throughout the fishing season. If you’re looking to maximize your time spent on the water, we suggest booking your vacation in the early summer months while the sun stays up until the late evening!

What You Can Catch

A group of self-guided fishermen posed with their 125 pound trophy halibut!

While self-guided fishing, you’ll have the opportunity to target all the same fish that you could target with a guide. This includes halibut, salmon, rockfish, ling cod, and pacific cod. If you’re interested in salmon fishing, check this guide to see what time of year your target species is available.

In our experience though, folks tend to have the best luck–and bring home the most meat–when they exclusively target halibut. Self-guided fishermen are allowed to keep up to two halibut of any size per person whereas guided fishermen can only keep one halibut that fits within the slot. To make the most out of your self-guided fishing experience, it makes the most sense to spend your time helping everyone catch their two halibut.

If you would like to target a species other than halibut, let us know beforehand! Because halibut fishing is so popular, we typically only set our guests up with halibut fishing gear. But upon request, our dock team will be happy to get you all the proper equipment for targeting whatever your desired species may be.

Just keep in mind that it’s important to always follow the rules and regulations while fishing. Before you head out, talk to one of our staff members to make sure that you’re up to date on the current regulations.

Luxury Fishing Boats!

Our two, brand new, identical, 20 foot, Wooldridge built fishing boats sport a Yamaha F150xb outboard motor–all the power you need to explore the Inside Passage. The sister ships have ultra cushy cabs that were designed for long days on the water. With a max capacity of 6 people, you’ll find plenty of space in the cab and out on the deck for you and your five closest fishing buddies to hangout without getting in each other's way.

At the captain’s station you’ll find everything you need to guide your trip safely and successfully: a state-of-the-art Garmin GPS, a brand new fish finder, and a high powered VHF radio. If you ever need help, you can always contact the lodge or one of our guided vessels and we’ll be happy to assist you.

It’s All Included

From state of the art electronics to downriggers for salmon fishing, you’ll find everything you need for your dream Alaska fishing experience on board your self-guided fishing boat.

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.
